Active Safari

Northern Tanzania:

Hikes in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area:

  • Incorporate a morning or afternoon walk along the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater or extend the walk for a multi-day trek. More info
  • Trek to Lake Natron from Olmoti or Empakai Craters, a three to four day undertaking through Maasai country. Your camp gear and supplies are carried on Maasai donkeys. Your vehicle awaits you in Natron. More info

Trekking to Lake Natron

  • In Natron, hike to waterfalls, to the lake, or climb 2878 meter high Mount Lengai, Tanzania's last active volcano.
  • Trek to Ndutu area from Endulen village, a two day venture, or begin at Maasai village of Naibartat and walk for one long day. From this direction it is all downhill.
  • Climb 3130 meter high Mount Lemagarut (also known as Makarot) using the special camp of Ilmisigiyo as a base camp. Afterwards, take two days to hike down an old rift escarpment to Lake Eyasi with armed ranger and Maasai support. More info

Mount Makarot is not Kilimanjaro, but I found it just as scenic and as interesting a climb. Personally, what I found intriguing was the fact that I had to be accompanied by an armed ranger because of the wildlife that can be encountered on the mountain. Turned out that the ranger and his rifle came in handy too when he fired it to scare away Cape buffalo! We didn't know the buffalo were there until we came right up on them. One warning shot ought to have worked, but in our case two buffalo didn't want to move from hiding—hence the ranger's need to fire five rapid shots into the air. (This likely won't happen to you so don’t worry :-).) I am pleased to be able to recommend this super climb even though the million dollar view from the top of Makarot was obscured by cloud.
