Sample Itineraries

These sample programs can be customized in any number of ways based on the month of your visit and where you choose to stay. Private camping is called "special" camping in Tanzania.

Northern Tanzania

Sample One:
For December to March, Ndutu should be included in the program. In the dry season, July to October, devote more time for the northern Serengeti.

1 - Drive to Ngorongoro Conservation Area; game drive in the Ngorongoro Crater. Special camping on the Ngorongoro Crater rim.
2 - Activity options: Hike to Olmoti Crater rim; descend Empakai Crater; walk along Ngorongoro Crater rim.
3 - Ngorongoro Crater to Ndutu area in Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Lodge, special camping, luxury seasonal camp.
4 - Ndutu area.
5 - Ndutu to Central Serengeti. Lodges, special camping, luxury seasonal camp.
6 - Central Serengeti.
7 - Central Serengeti to Northern Serengeti. Lodges, special camping, luxury seasonal camp.
8 - Northern Serengeti to Lake Natron via Loliondo Game Controlled Area. Budget camping, simple permanent tented camp and luxury camp.
9 - Lake Natron area: hiking; climbing the active volcano Mount Lengai; cultural visits with Maasai.
10 - Lake Natron to Tarangire National Park. Lodges, permanent tented camps.
11 - Tarangire National Park.
12 - Tarangire to Arusha.

 

Sample Two:
Best December to March.

1 - Arusha to Ngorongoro Crater. Game drive in crater. Lodge, special camping on Ngorongoro Crater rim.
2 - Activity options: Hike to Olmoti Crater rim; descend Empakai Crater. Camp overnight on Empakai Crater rim.
3 - Trek from Empakai Crater camp site to Acacia Camp, a distance of 18 kms. Camp gear and supplies are carried on Maasai donkeys.
4 - Trek down the rift escarpment to waiting vehicles at foot of active volcano Mount Lengai, a distance of 20 kms. Overnight options at Lake Natron are budget camping, simple permanent tented camp, luxury tented camp.
5 - Lake Natron area: hiking; climbing the active volcano Mount Lengai; cultural encounters with Maasai people.
6 - Lake Natron to Gol Mountains. Special camping, luxury seasonal camp.
7 - Gol Mountains area. Visit to OlKarien Gorge, only East African nesting site of Ruppell’s Griffon vultures.
8 - Gol Mountains to Ndutu area. Lodge, special camping, luxury seasonal camp.
9 - Ndutu area.
10 - Ndutu to Central Serengeti. Lodge.
11 - Central Serengeti. Lodge.
12 - Serengeti to Arusha, or linger one more night before your return at Plantation Lodge or Gibbs farm in the Mbulu Highlands.

10 - Mbulu Highlands to Lake Eyasi. Camping, tented camp.
11 - Lake Eyasi area, cultural encounters with Datoga and Hadzabe peoples.
12 - Lake Eyasi to Tarangire National Park. Tented camp on eastern border of park.
13 - Tarangire National Park.
14 - Tarangire to Arusha.

 

Southern Tanzania

Day   Activity
0 - Arrive Dar es Salaam.
1 - Drive to the Selous Game Reserve. Afternoon boat safari on Rufiji river. Overnight Mbega Camp, a permanent tented camp just outside the reserve entrance.
2 - Enter the reserve. Game drives. Special camping Lake Manze region.
3 - Morning walking safari with armed ranger. Afternoon game drives to hot springs. Special camping Lake Manze region.
4 - Selous Game Reserve. Overnight same location.
5 - Drive Selous to Morogoro town through Uluguru Mountains. Overnight Kola Hills Guesthouse, Morogoro town.
6 - Drive to Mikumi National Park. Game drives in park. Overnight permanent tented camp.
7 - Drive to Ruaha National Park. Special camping Mwagusi River.
8 - Ruaha National Park.
9 - Ruaha National Park.
10 - Morning game drive in Ruaha. Drive Ruaha to Udzungwa Mountains National Park. Overnight Udzungwa Mountain View Guesthouse.
11 - Udzungwa National Park. Sanje waterfall hike. Overnight Udzungwa Mountain View Guesthouse.
12 - Drive to the Kilombero Valley and village on northern fringes of Selous Game Reserve. Overnight options local guesthouse or camping.
13 - Kilombero to Dar es Salaam.

 

Tour Prices:
There are many factors which affect final costs - the size of your group, the length of travel, the season, the itinerary and the accommodation choices. The following guidelines of prices per person per day might be of some help:

Budget: US$200 to $280.00
Mid-range: $280.00 to $500.00
Luxury: over $500.00
