  • Ear plugs, for any number of reasons.

  • Saline solution for dry and dusty eyes.
  • Lip balm for dry lips.

Good Used Gear
If I cannot persuade you to hold on to your safari hat with chin strap (how about a Southern Tanzanian safari?), I will help put you in touch with someone who is going on safari and needs it. Buyers and sellers of good used gear please let me know what you are parting with and what it is that you seek.
  • Sun hat with chin-strap
  • Sun glasses
  • Spare prescription glasses
  • A clothes line and a few pegs, if camping.
  • Pocket knife, packed in check-in luggage.
  • Personal stash of toilet paper, Kleenex and handy wipes.
  • Water bottle holder for trekking, and for recognizing your own bottle in the vehicle.
  • Small soap powder for hand washes.
  • Travel sewing kit with a few rubber bands and safety pins.
  • Pens and paper for diary/notes. Extra pens as gifts for children.
  • Travel guide, wildlife and bird guides.
  • A good map.
  • Book to read, in the event of delays.
  • Film, batteries and chips for digital cameras. We charge batteries at the lodges and tented camps.
  • Plug adaptors for cameras. African outlets have three square pins or two round pins like those in Britain. Electricity is 230 V.
  • Camera lenses: For wildlife photography, the best, minimum focal length is 300 mm. Four hundred mm is better. Digital increases these focal lengths to amazing results.
  • Excellent binoculars.
  • A good flashlight and supply of batteries and spare bulbs.
  • A pocket calculator for bargaining.
  • Money pouch for waist or around neck.
  • Copies of tickets, passport, and any credit cards that you carry. Leave another copy at home where someone has access to them; send another copy to your e-mail address.
  • Soft sided luggage. It fits better in the back of vehicles. It will get dusty.
  • Several Ziploc plastic bags. I always find a use for them, like protecting my camera against the dust.
  • Several long-sleeved cotton shirts to wear when the mosquitoes emerge.
  • Warm clothes for camping nights at 3500 meters in the Crater Highlands.
  • Swimsuit.
  • Quick-drying towel.
  • A bandana, handy to tie across mouth to protect against the dust.
  • Your own pillow. I recommend it if you can fit it in.
  • Rubber shoes for around camp and for the camp site shower.
  • Sturdy runners or boots.
